The 30-foot, two-story sculpture titled ‘The Tornado’ at the University of Alberta, showcases intricate 3D architectural design and metal fabrication. This impressive installation is part of a broader initiative to enhance the campus environment, combining aesthetic beauty with functional art.

Project Approach

IMARK Architectural Metals proudly fabricated and installed ‘The Tornado,’ a stunning 30-foot, two-story architectural artwork at the University of Alberta. The concept originated from an architect who provided a basic 2D architectural drawing, without a model to reference. Our team utilized advanced 3D modeling and a CNC router-cutting machine to create 143 triangular pieces of phenolic material, each with 3-inch flanges uniquely bent at different angles.

Thanks to the 3D architectural model that took about 140 hours to complete, we didn’t even have to remake or adjust any of the pieces in the end. Using 2D to 3D architecture, we transformed basic 2D drawings into a stunning 3D digital reality. IMARK’s expertise in custom metal fabrication and installation brought this complex vision to life.

Project Approach

The structure was fabricated using precision-cut 18-gauge steel, and processed on our CNC laser cutting machine. For rigidity and seamless mounting, we incorporated 3-inch flanges on each side. The panels are securely attached to the steel framework using self-tapping screws, a method that streamlined our assembly and installation process. This approach allowed us to complete the project with efficiency and precision.
