Project Background
Slate Asset Management embarked on an ambitious transformation of the 40 storey tower, formerly called Scotia Center. This classic of the Calgary skyline has undergone a significant renovation – from its public-access ground floor to exclusive tenant amenities and top-floor restaurant. Through partnerships with Oliver & Bonacini Hospitality as well as Concorde Entertainment, Slate’s vision for the tower has transform this part of Stephen Avenue into a vibrant restaurant, retail, and office hub.
Stephen Avenue Place offers 620,000 square feet of rentable space at the nexus of the historic Stephen Avenue Walk and 2nd St.
Project Approach
Slate’s ambition to bring a renewed sense of life to this building included elements of architectural flair for the podium façade. Without a doubt the Ocular Perforated Metal Panel Imaging that covers over 5,300 sq ft of the second floor façade and wraps around from Stephen Avenue to 2nd street, make this building a standout amongst others in the Calgary core.
Having worked closely with the Artist to maximize the effectiveness of the artwork on the panel, the Ocular Perforating Metal Imaging software was used to translate this signature artwork element onto the metal panel. From this point, our in-house manufacturing team created the panel system with the continuous imagery across the surface with a simple substructure that is precise and quick to install. In fact, our friends at Flynn Calgary, who did the install, said “it was one of the easiest panel systems I’ve ever worked with”.
A strong collaborative effort amongst the Architects, Artist and contracting group backed by Slate, positions this office tower with a true sense of forward-thinking architecture that appropriately ties in the building to the basic elements of Stephen Avenue as a pedestrian friendly streetscape.
Sustainability
IMARK worked with the installation team and designers to provide efficient panel sizes to minimize scrap and offcut material. Any remaining offcut or scrap material were 100% recycled by nature of aluminum’s inherent recycling properties and IMARK’s commitment to sustainability.
